History

Johnny Appleseed’s real name is John Chapman. He was an American nurseryman who introduced apples in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, and Pennsylvania. During his early days in the USA, he was a conservationist and a missionary.

Unfortunately, though, even with extensive research about this holiday, we are not sure as to how the Johnny Appleseed started or even who founded it. But still, we can make a good guess as to why this day began – perhaps a person or a group of people thought the Johnny Appleseed had a major contribution in the country but lacks the recognition for it. Hence, the Johnny Appleseed Day was born in honor of him.

Why Celebrate

The following are the main reasons why you should participate in the celebration of the Johnny Appleseed Day:

Apples are Healthy

Who doesn’t love apples? There is indeed a saying that “An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away” (though many experts now contest this saying claiming that it should be banana and not apple). Regardless of that, apple are good sources of fiber, potassium, and vitamins C and K. Hence, you definitely should celebrate this day in order to get these health benefits of eating apples.

We All Love Apples

Perhaps there is no person in the world who doesn’t love eating apples (well maybe with the exception of Snow White who ate a poisoned apple, no pun intended). We all love the sweetness and delicious flavor of apple. If this fruit is one of your favorites, then you definitely should celebrate this holiday.

To Honor Johnny Appleseed

Another good reason to celebrate this day is that there is no other better day that we can honor Johnny Appleseed except this day. This occasion happens only once a year. So do take time to honor him during this celebration.

Celebration Ideas and Activities

The following are the best things to do to make your celebration of the Johnny Appleseed Day as best as it can be:

Eat Tons of Apples

During this day, you have the excuse to eat as many apples as you want. This is your day of celebration if you are especially fond of apples. So go purchase your apples from the department store or fruit stand before they ran out.

Make Apple Cider

You can also spend your time during this day by making an apple cider. You can brew this up easily. If you don’t know how, you can refer to an online video or a cook book that will guide you on how to create an apple cider.

Learn the Appleseed traveling hymn

Did you know that there is an Appleseed travelling hymn? Most Americans still sing this hymn before eating supper. The lyrics goes, “I thank the Lord For giving me the things I need: the sun and rain and apple seed.”

Visit Appleseed Day birthplace

You can also celebrate this day by visiting Johnny Appleseed’s birthplace. It is located in Leominster, Massachusetts, home to the Johnny Appleseed Visitors Center, the Johnny Appleseed Arts & Culture Festival and, of course, Johnny Appleseed Lane — birthplace of the man himself.
