History of Christopher Street Day

We can trace back the celebration of Christopher Street Day back on June 28, 1969 in the city of New York. This is a day when the members of the LGBT community fought back against the assault of policemen which occurred in the Stonewall Inn at Manhattan. This event is known as the Stonewall Rebellion or the Stonewall Riots. It marked the spontaneous demonstrations of the members of the LGBT community.

Unfortunately, most of these ended up in violence. The reason for these arrests is that back in those times, being an LGBT member is an illegal act. So what the authorities did was that they raided homosexual establishments regularly and imposed draconian measures to people who engaged in homosexual behavior. Even a simple act of showing homosexuality can lead to a person being imprisoned for several years and up.

In order to observe the Stonewall Riots, the Christopher Street West Association and the Christopher Street liberation which are located in the cities of Los Angeles and New York respectively started to celebrate Christopher Street Day on June 28, 1970. They established some of the first gay pride parades in the history of the world.

These days, Christopher Street Day is being celebrated continuously by people during the last Saturday of June in LA and New York. More and more countries adopted the celebration of this special day. For instance, Switzerland started to observe this in 1978. Meanwhile, Germany started to celebrate this in 1979.
