History
Bolivia, then, was known as Charcas under the Spanish colonial rule during the middle of the 16th century. Initial desires for independence came from concerns about the ability of Spain to properly rule the region when came under attack from France led by Napoleon Bonaparte during the Peninsular War.
What is the Chuquisaca Revolution?
On May 25, 1809, the Chuquisaca Revolution was held. It was the first popular uprising in Latin America and became known as the “Primer Grito liberation” in Bolivia. This was held in Chuquisaca, now known as modern-day Sucre. This led to the Bolivian War of Independence which lasted for 16 years. On August 6, 1825, the colonial forces were defeated and the independence of Bolivia was proclaimed.
Where did the name of Bolivia come from?
The Spanish conquered Bolivia in 1524. A counter offense against the Spanish empire was launched under the leadership of Simon Bolivar (to whom the name of the country came from). In order to honor his role in leading the fight for independence, Charcas was renamed Bolivia.
