History

The Chinese Language Day is an initiative of the United Nations and is just one of the six celebrations about languages that it founded. Along with this event are the Arabic Language Day (December 18), the English Language Day (April 23), the French Language Day (March 20), Russian Language Day (June 6), and the Spanish Language Day (April 23). The declaration of these days by the UN was made in the year 2010. The date of April 20 was chosen for the Chinese Language Day in order to pay tribute to Cangjie, a Chinese mythical figure who is believed to have invented Chinese characters more than 5,000 years ago.
