Eid Ul Fitr: Rituals & Observances

Sadaqat ul Fitr is compulsory on every adult and responsible Muslim, who owns at least 613.35 grams of silver or its equivalent, either in the form of goods, money, or other items. Every person who owns such wealth, have to pay Sadaqatul Fitr on behalf of himself and on behalf of his minor children to a poor family. For each person, the prescribed amount of Sadaqatul Fitr is 1.75 kilograms of wheat or it’s equivalent money.

Doing charity on Eid ul Fitr is obligatory on every adult male and female Muslim. He/She has to pay both for themselves as well as his/her minor children if they have one.

According to Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad, Sadaqatul Fitr should only be paid to the person who is entitled to receive Zakah. The donation must be made before the Eid ul Fitr prayer (anytime between last Ramadan night and the Eid morning prayer).

Eid Ul Fitr Prayer

Eid Ul Fitr Prayer, also known as Eid Ul Fitr Namaz or Salat al-Eid, is the special prayer offered to commemorate the festival traditionally in a large congregation. The prayer is usually offered in a grand Jamia mosque, Eid Gah, or large empty field with thousands of Muslims in attendance.

First Rakaat

• Follow the imam beginning the prayer raising both hands up to the ears and saying Takbeer-e-Tahrima (Allahu Akbar). This is the first takbeer to enter the Eid Salah.
• Recite Thana’ (Subhanak Allahumma…)

Second Rakaat

• As you rise for the second Rak’ah, you should stand straight and fold your arms as usual. Listen to the recitation of Fatihah and a Surah.
• Takbeer, say Allahu Akbar with the imam, then let the hands down – leaving them earthwards

• Eid ul Fitr marks an end to Ramadan, which is the 9th Islamic month, also known as the month of fasting.
• Eid ul Fitr marks the arrival of the new Islamic month of Shawwal. The festival is celebrated on the 1st of Shawwal.
• The Arabic term “Eid ul Fitr” translates to “The Fest/Festival of Fast-Breaking”.
• The date of Eid ul Fitr is June 5, Wednesday.
• Eid ul Fitr moon will be sighted on the 29th Ramadan night. Eid announcement will be made after the sighting of the new crescent moon.
• This year, the festival of Eid ul Fitr will be celebrated by 2 billion Muslims across the globe.
• Eid is a religious, public, and national holiday in all Muslim countries.
• According to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Eid is a festival gifted by Allah to His people as a celebratory reward after the month of Ramadan.
