Eid Ul Adha: Greetings, Jokes, Shayari, Messages, Bari Eid Mubarak Wishes, Funny Status

Eid ul Adha is an Islamic holiday that commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion to Allah and his willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail on the commandments of Allah. At the very point of sacrifice, Allah replaced Ismail with a lab, which was then slaughtered by Ibrahim in place of his son.

What is Eid Ul Adha?

Eid ul Adha Picture

Eid ul Adha is the second of the two Islamic Eids celebrated annually by the worldwide Muslim community (the other being Eid ul Fitr). This Islamic festival honors the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his only son, Ismail, on the commandments of Allah.

But, before Abraham could sacrifice his son, Allah replaced his son with a lamb to sacrifice instead. Allah was so delighted with Ibrahim’s immediate submission to Him that He made this demonstration of sacrifice and faith a permanent part of a Muslim’s life.

Today, in commemoration of this historic event, Muslims sacrifice an animal on Eid ul Adha and distribute the meat. The commonly sacrificed animals are a sheep, lamb or a cow and each animal has to meet certain quality and age or else the animal is considered unacceptable for the sacrifice.

What is the meaning of Eid Ul Adha?

The word “Eid” is Arabic, meaning: feast, festival, celebration, and holiday. The word “Adha” means animal sacrifice.

What are the other names for Eid ul Adha?

The other names of Eid ul Adha are Eid ul Azha, Bakra Eid, Feast of Sacrifice, the Hajj Feast, the Greater Eid, Bari Eid, or the Feast of the Goat.

When is Eid ul Adha celebrated?

Eid ul Adha is celebrated on the 10th, 11th, and 12th day of Dhu al-Hijjah. Dhu al-Hijjah is the twelfth and final month of the Islamic lunar or Hijri calendar.

According to the Gregorian Calendar, the upcoming Eid ul Adha will fall on Monday, 19 July – based on the sighting of the moon of Dhul Hijjah.

Why do the dates of Eid ul Adha change every year?

Well, it is because the Islamic calendar is lunar, which is a little bit different to what we are used to. In the Lunar calendar, one year is 355 days, which is 10 days less than the Gregorian Calendar. So, as a result, the Islamic festival of Eid Ul Adha shifts yearly.

What is the origin of Eid ul Adha?

To test Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion and submission, Allah ordered Ibrahim to sacrifice his dearest son, Ismail. Upon hearing this command, Prophet Ibrahim readily submitted to the will of God.

He took his son to the Mount of Arafah. During the sacrificial preparation, Shaitan (the Devil) tempted Ibrahim to not to follow Allah’s commandments, but Abraham remained adherent to Allah’s commandment and drove Satan away by throwing pebbles at home.

When Adam had laid down his dearest son Ismail for the sacrifice and put the knife close to his throat, Allah (SWT) immediately replaced Ismail with a lamb. Ibrahim was astonished to see his son unharmed and a lamb slaughtered instead. Ibrahim passed the test to carry out Allah’s commandments without any hesitation.

Abraham has shown that his love and devotion to God surpasses all: that he will lay down his life in subjection to the order of God or the lives of those dear to him. Now, each year during Eid al-Adha, Muslims celebrate this supreme sacrifice.

Eid ul Adha Celebrations, Traditions and Activities

Being the holiest of all the festivals in Islam, Eid ul Adha is celebrated with great zeal and vigor by Muslims worldwide. In Muslim countries, Eid is a public holiday that involves Qurbani (animal sacrifice), Eid prayers, parties, and family gatherings.

For all the three days of Eid ul Adha, there’s a public holiday observed. All schools, offices, banks, and private and government institutes remain shut closed.

Purchasing Animal for Eid Sacrifice. Muslim’s kick-start the celebrations for Eid Ul Adha, a week before the date. It’s the time when they purchase animals for sacrifice. In Muslim countries – such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, and UAE – there are special animal markets arranged in every city and town.

Financially-abled people in large numbers head to the animal markets to purchase goats, sheep, cows, and camels. Also, Muslims (in a group of 7 people) share in the purchase of a cow or a camel (Check out Cow Appreciation Day). As cow or camel is equivalent to 7 Qurbanis, so a group of seven people add equal portions of money and purchase a big animal to fulfill the Qurbani on their behalf.

Purchasing new outfits and fashion accessories. A day or a few days before Eid, Muslim families head to the local bazaars or shopping malls – to purchase new clothes, shoes, and fashion accessories – to wear on Eid ul Adha. Having an intention to look the best on the upcoming Eid, both kids and adults, try their best to purchase the most beautiful of outfits.

Getting ready on Eid day and offering prayers. Early morning, a few hours after Fajr prayers, Muslim families start preparing themselves for the Eid celebration. Everyone takes a fresh morning bath, wears new clothes, and apply perfume.

Muslim men head out to the mosques to offer their Eid prayers. The mosques are over-crowded with a huge number of believers, who perform two Eid rakaats behind the Imam, listen the Eid Khutba, and pray to Allah – thanking Him for gifting them such a supreme festival and asking Him for unity and prosperity of Muslims.

On the other hand – Muslim women prepare Eid breakfast, which normally includes sweet dishes and desserts such as Sheer Khurma, Falooda, Kheera, and Baklava.

Performing animal sacrifice. After performing the Eid prayers, Muslims fulfill the important rite i.e animal sacrifice. The meat of the sacrificed animal is divided into three parts: one for the owner’s use, one for neighbors and relatives, and one for the poor and needy of the society.

Preparing delicious meals. After the main festivities of Eid, the rest of the days are spent preparing delicious dishes and enjoying them with family. The dishes that are eaten vary according to the region and culture, but meat-based biryani, curries, and BBQs are common.

Visiting friends, going for a picnic. Another common custom related to Eid ul Adha is visiting friends and relatives, greeting happy eid Mubarak to each other, and feasting together on delicious dishes. Since Eid is a public holiday, so it’s a great time for families to unite together and celebrate the bonds of love.

Many people also celebrate Eid holidays by going to recreation spots with their kids and families, and enjoying the Eid days to the fullest!
