Cancer remains to be one of the deadliest diseases in the world. It remains to be like that because most forms of cancer still have no treatment. And even though some types of cancer can be treated, they are hard to do so. But there are still people who survive the illness. They are called cancer survivors and are looked upon as brace citizens who were able to conquer such a deadly disease. And so to honor these people, we celebrate National Cancer Survivors Day each year on the first Sunday of June.

What is National Cancer Survivors Day?

This event is predominantly celebrated in the United States. But more and more people are beginning to celebrate the event in other countries as well. Credit for this can be given to the National Cancer Survivors Foundation for their continued efforts in making the event a popular one in other countries aside from the US. During this day, various activities are held to honor those people who were able to successfully battle cancer.

What is the History of National Cancer Survivors Day?

The National Cancer Survivors Day was founded by Merril Hastings during the second national conference meeting of the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship which was held in Albuquerque, New Mexico on November 20, 1987. To formalize the celebrations, Hastings filed the name of the event as an International Class 042 Service. He also registered the name with the United States Patent and Trademark Office in the name of Pulse Publications.

The first National Cancer Survivors Day was held back on June 5, 1988. The event then continued as an annual celebration in the country ever since.

When is National Cancer Survivors Day?

As previously mentioned, this day is always held on the first Sunday of June each year. This means that this year, we are all going to celebrate National Cancer Survivors Day on June 7.

Various activities are done to celebrate National Cancer Survivors Day in the best way possible. But usually, local cities, towns, hospitals, communities, groups, and related organizations, host celebrations and events to celebrate the day.   • The National Cancer Survivor Day Foundation aims to expand the celebration of the holiday internationally. Some of the countries they target include Australia, Malaysia, South Africa, Guam, India, Netherlands, American Samoa, Trinidad, Tobago, Antigua, Italy, Canada, and the Cayman Islands.

  • The first-ever National Cancer Survivors Day was held on June 5, 1988.
