The origin of the high five is quite obscured. But people believe that it goes back to the 1970s. People talk about two stories about the origin of this gesture. The first story goes back at the Dodger Stadium on October 2, 1977. Dusty Baker and Glenn Burke did a high five in response to a home run hit by baker off of Houston Astros pitcher J.R. Richard.

The second story about the origin of this gesture took place at the University of Louisville Cardinals basketball practice in 1978. Wiley Brown wanted to give his teammate Derek Smith a low five. But instead, they did a high five. After that, teams started to give each other high fives to celebrate.

Now about the origin of the National High Five Day, the story can be traced back at the University of Virginia in 2002. Students set up a shop on the campus’ main quad and gave out lemonades and high fives. This idea soon became popular and people started celebrating the National High Five Day every third Thursday of April.
