About the National Maple Syrup Day

During the National Maple Syrup Day, people conduct various activities that let them achieve the objectives or purposes of the celebration. For one, people try to indulge themselves into Maple Syrup, sipping it alone. Other people make use of maple syrup to make their hotcakes, pancakes, toasts, or biscuits delicious. People also shout out on social media how they are participating in the celebration of the event.

History

Maple syrup is usually extracted from the xylem sap of red, black, or sugar maple trees. But there are other maple trees where the syrup can be extracted as well. During spring, the starch of the maple tree transforms into sugar which then rises through the sap. Holes can be bored into the trees where sap can be collected. The collected sap is processed through heat in order to evaporate the water. The result is the concentrated syrup.

The process of maple syrup extraction was first done by native Americans in North America. Their method was refined by European settlers when they came in. During the 1970s, the processing of syrup was further refined because of technological advancements. A production site or farm of maple syrup is called a sugar wood or sugarbush.

The USA was the world’s largest producer of maple syrup until the 1930s, when Canada overtook the country as the largest producer. In the USA alone, the largest producer of maple syrup is Vermont.

With limited knowledge about the origins of Maple Syrup, even less is known about the history of National Maple Syrup Day. We don’t know when, where, and how it began. We also don’t have a clue as to who founded it. But still, we can make a good guess as to why the such an event was established in the first place. Perhaps a person or a group of people thought that maple syrup is much loved by the people. They must have then thought that it deserves a spot in the list of food holidays celebrated every year.
