History

The National Biscuit Company is the one responsible for creating Oreos. They did so back in 1912. It was called Oreo Biscuit that time. On March 6, 1912, the company filed for a trademark for this cookie which was granted on March 14, 1912. But during that time, it was considered as a copy of another cookie called the Hydrox Cookie which was created 4 years earlier by the Sunshine Company. The National Biscuit Company is now known as Nabisco.

Oreos were first sold for about 25 cents per pound. They were sold in cans. About nine years after the first Oreo Biscuit was sold, the National Biscuit Company decided to change the name of the cookie to Oreo Sandwich. In the 1920s, the Oreo cookie underwent a lot of design changes. After World War II, the biscuit’s name was changed again into Oreo Crème Sandwich in 1948.

Oreo’s Evolution

As the years went by, lots of varieties of Oreos were developed and sold to the people. These include the following:

  • Double Stuf Oreo in 1974
  • Football Oreo in 1976
  • Big Stuf Oreo in 1987
  • Oreo Minis in 1991
  • Mega Stuff Oreos in 2013
  • Oreo Thins in 2015

  • Birthday Cake Oreos
