The history of the National Trails Day goes as far back as 1968. During October of that year, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Trails Act into law, which founded a network of trails that people could use for both recreation and tourism.

In 1976, the Hiking Society was founded. They were involved in the expansion of multiple trails available to people so that they would get out more and explore those.

In 1987, there was a consensus that the government needs to get more committed in expanding the network of trails available. More funds were then put into them so that local officials could develop their trails.

In 1993, the Hiking Society organized the first ever celebration of the National Trails Day. From that point onwards, the National Trails Day became a regular celebration every year during the first Saturday of June.
