The 50th UAE National Day celebrations will be held on  2 December, at Zayed Sports City.

The 50th UAE National Day celebration is named ‘This is Zayed. This is the UAE”. It is a visual show, celebrating and respecting the life and accomplishments of the UAE’s establishing father, the late Sheik Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may Allah rest his soul in peace), whose centennial birth year matches with the 50th anniversary of the UAE’s union.

The show reflects on Sheikh Zayed’s life as the Emiratis shed insight on the inspiring story of how one man, with remarkable dreams and boundless love and energy, established the frameworks for the flourishing nation they presently live in. Driven by his connection to the land, love of his people, passion for culture, and profound confidence in his religion, he was a generous man concentrated on making an awesome future for those he considered “his children” – which are every one of the UAE’s citizens.

UAE’s Independence History

UAE Independence History

Before the formation of the United Arab Emirates in 1971, the country was known as the Trucial States — a collection of Sheikhdoms stretching out from the Straits of Hormuz toward the west along the Arabian Gulf.

The Early Settlements & Life in UAE Before Independence

Not long ago, the UAE was a place where there were deserts possessed by ingenious nomadic Bedouin tribes, fishing towns, and date farms. Abu Dhabi comprised a few hundred palm cottages (barasti) huts, a couple of coral structures and the Ruler’s Fortress. Arranged along the creek, Dubai was a trading hub, providing a safe haven before the Straits of Hormuz and beyond.

The first-ever traces of human advancement in the UAE date from 7500 years from now. Archeological findings demonstrate that around then, early Bedouins practiced trade and were nomadic. Even then, the region was a sandy desert, without any animals aside from a couple of camels, and without water, which implies there was no vegetation. Just in the few oases could grow palm trees. It was, therefore, important to move with the end goal to survive and the inhabitants of the district were normally merchants and nomads.

The Installing Of British Protectorate In UAE (1820 – 1971)

A peace treaty was signed with the main goal of suppressing piracy along the Gulf Coast. This was marked between the British Government and the Sheikhs of Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Sharjah, and Ajman. For many centuries, the region was buried in rivalries between local emirs on land while pirates scoured the oceans and used the states’ shores as their shelter.

Britain started attacking pirates to secure its trade with India. That prompted British ties with the Trucial States’ emirs. In 1820, Britain and local rulers of the Trucial States signed a treaty to combat piracy along the Gulf coast. From this, and later arrangements, the region came to be known as the Trucial Coast.

UAE & Britain Agreements: UAE Becomes A British Protectorate

In 1892, an arrangement between the Trucial States and Britain gave Britain authority over foreign affairs and each emirate control over internal affairs. The Trucial States formed a close bond with the British Government by marking a treaty in 1892. While the Trucial States were not officially absorbed into the British Domain, they turned into a British Protectorate. This implied the British would protect them from all hostilities, be it land or ocean.

Consequently, the Trucial States weren’t permitted to sell any land to another country without Britain’s authorization. It offered security for both parties. This relationship between Trucial States (present-day UAE) and Britain lasted for 150 years, until 1971.

The Decline Of Pearl Diving in UAE

Pearling was the major trade of the Trucial States up to the 1920s, with a large percentage of the populace depending on it for their livelihoods. The business started to decay after the First World War and wasn’t advanced by the Great Depression in 1929. Moreover, the advanced industrial methods of manufacturing pearls by such nations as Japan, in the end, made the pearling business in the Trucial States die out totally.

After the Second World War, with the pearling business dead, the Trucial States experienced a period of hardship, yet it wasn’t long before things began to look better.

The Discovery Of Oil In UAE

In spite of oil companies starting the search for oil before the outbreak of the Second World War, it wasn’t until 1958 when the first oil well was found in UAE. The area was Umm Shaif, off the coast of Abu Dhabi, as well as inland in the desert region of Murban soon after.

Oil trades started in 1962, and both Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Nahyan of Abu Dhabi and Shaikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum of Dubai rapidly started enhancing the lives of their people by building schools, houses, hospitals, and roads.

The British Leave UAE

Soon, the British were unable to avoid the raising of the Emirates, driven by Sheik Zayed. Britain’s original aim was to combine every one of the nine states (Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ras al-Khaimah, Fujairah, Ajman, Umm al Quwain, and Bahrain and Qatar) into a united federation, yet this didn’t transform into reality. The plan was to frame a solitary state comprising of Bahrain, Qatar and the Trucial Coast states. However, varying interests made this attempt of Britain unsuccessful.

Furthermore, as Qatar and Bahrain had also found oil wells in the meantime, they neglected to achieve an agreement over a common state. They each made an independent country on their own. Seeing this, Britain concluded that it could no longer stand to ensure the Trucial States and consented to lift their protectorate over the UAE in 1968.

UAE Becomes Fully Independent

The British protectorate treaty expired on December 1, 1971. Sheikh Zayed, who understood that unity is the strength, took under his wings the six emirates that form the United Arab Emirates today. These 6 emirates were: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Fujairah, Ajman, and Umm al Qaiwain.

In July 1971, six of these Trucial States conceded to a Federal Constitution for achieving independence as the United Arab Emirates.

The UAE emerged as a completely independent state on 2 December 1971. Sheikh Zayed of Abu Dhabi was appointed as the President of the country, and Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai, became Prime Minister.

Sheikh Zayed

After two months in February 1972, the remaining sheikhdom, Ras Al Khaimah, also joined the United Arab Emirates, thus UAE was now an independent country made of 7 emirates.

UAE After Independence & The Rule of Al Nahyan Family

Soon after Independence and as the oil trade flourished, the Emiratis developed all that was missing previously: schools, hospitals, homes, water (through desalination), and import food.

The Al Nahyan family shared their fortune and made all Emiratis rich. Altogether not to depend just on oil, and not falling once more into poverty in case of hardship, they started to broaden their economy and to invest money everywhere throughout the world.

At last, they started to develop globally, fiscally and military, to prevent attacks by neighboring nations. Indeed, Iran has exploited from the establishment of the UAE and took three islands rich in oil that the UAE never recouped.
