What is the National Candy Day?

National Candy DayThe National Candy Day is observed each year on the 4th of November. Candies come in different flavors, colors, sizes, shapes, and varieties. There are sweet candies, sour candies, and even spicy candies. There are candies that are color red, yellow, blue, and even a combination of many different colors. There are candies as small as the thumb while some are even as big as a bottle. These candies are given honor during the celebration of the aforementioned holiday.

History of the National Candy Day

Candies have a long history in our culture. The term candy started to be used by humans around late 13th century by Middle English. The origin was from the French word cucre candi, which is in turn derived from the wards Qand and Qandi which are Persian words that mean cane sugar.

Going back further in time before sugar was invented, candies were derived from honey and fruits. Honey was used as coating for fruits and flowers for preservation purposes and also to create various forms of candies. Though today, there are still varieties of candies served this way.

In the 18th century, the first candies came to France and Britain. The simplest form of candy that time was the Rock Candy made from crystalized sugar. However, sugar was so expensive that time that only the wealthy ones were able to afford candy.

When the world was able to produce more sugar than ever, sugars became cheap and so are candies. In time, technological advances enabled the creation of more and more candies in the easiest ways possible. Hence, the candy industry underwent drastic changes. More and more people found them affordable and so the demand for candies exploded.

People have since used the word candy to denote several sweet things such as candy bars, licorice, chocolates, salty candies, sour candies, hard candies, tart candies, gumdrops, taffies, marshmallows, and many more. Nowadays, we have so many kinds of candies and we love eating them. For that reason, we started to celebrate a special holiday for candies alone.
