The International Day of Happiness was founded on June 28, 2012 through the UN International Day of Happiness Resolution. This was campaigned and championed by Jayme Illien, a UN adviser. He conceptualized this idea recognizing that happiness is basically a human right and an important fundamental human goal. His campaign was successful as all 193 member states of the United Nations reached a consensus declaring March 20 as the International Day of Happiness.

The International Day of Happiness is all about recognizing the importance of being happy. It calls the attention of countries to direct their public policies towards the improvement of the well-being of their citizens which will eventually lead to those citizens being happy and fulfilled.
