The International Day of Happiness is celebrated every March 20 worldwide. It was conceptualized by Jayme Illien, a prominent UN special adviser, activist, statesman, and philanthropist. The aim of the day is the inspiration, mobilization, and advancement of the global movement on happiness. It is currently celebrated in about 193 member states of the Unite Nations, 11 territories, and 2 observer states. the campaign for happiness is coordinated by the Action for Happiness, which is a non-profit movement of people coming from 160 countries. Although nowadays, the advancement of the economies of countries is of prime importance, one should not neglect that happiness comes along with it.

History of International Day of Happiness

The International Day of Happiness was founded on June 28, 2012 through the UN International Day of Happiness Resolution. This was campaigned and championed by Jayme Illien, a UN adviser. He conceptualized this idea recognizing that happiness is basically a human right and an important fundamental human goal. His campaign was successful as all 193 member states of the United Nations reached a consensus declaring March 20 as the International Day of Happiness.

The International Day of Happiness is all about recognizing the importance of being happy. It calls the attention of countries to direct their public policies towards the improvement of the well-being of their citizens which will eventually lead to those citizens being happy and fulfilled. The focus of the UN during this day is to bring attention to the world about the idea of inclusive and equitable economic growth which is the concept of promoting sustainable development while also alleviating poverty. The United Nations acknowledges the fact that economic development is indeed beneficial for a country. But it must also be accompanied by environmental and social well-being.

Celebration of International Day of Happiness

Each member state of the United Nations participates in the International Day of Happiness. Usually, newspapers, TV news shows, and other media outlets remind everyone about this special day during the actual day or a few days ahead of it. Many schools and universities participate in the event by conducting and holding several activities aimed at raising awareness about the importance of happiness. Many of these activities even bring out happiness from within people as they are fun and enjoyable to do.

Many organizations and clubs, especially those with close ties with the United Nations, celebrate the day by conducting various outdoor activities targeted at making people happy. They also aim to inform people that happiness can be achieved in various channels. For instance, being happy is a result of having a stable and financially sustainable life, being satisfied with one’s own things, being able to achieve one’s goals and targets, being happy together with one’s family, being able to live in a clean environment, being free of diseases and illnesses, and more. Happiness seems to be a very important concept for people especially since we basically work hard in order to achieve happiness in the end. Happiness is indeed the main theme of International Happiness Day. The public participates actively especially celebrities who advocate for the happiness of individuals. This is evidently seen from the mass participation of families, clubs, organizations, friends, and various groups in the celebration of this day.

Many well-known people and personalities also participate in the event. For instance, in 2013, Ndaba Mandel, the grandson of the late South African President Nelson Mandela, and Chelsea Clinton, the daughter of Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton, led the inauguration of the first-ever celebration of the International Happiness Day.

In 2014, the day was promoted by Pharell Williams who was the singer of the very famous song called “Happy”. The campaign for the day involved a promotion for people to create their own music videos using the song. It became a global hit and many people participated in this fun activity.
