At times, they even save people in trouble. So let us learn more about this special day of celebration down below.
What is National Mutt Day?
This day is actually celebrated twice each year – one on July 31 and another on December 2. We celebrated mixed breed dogs although this is an unofficial holiday. It proclaims that mixed breed dogs are just as special as pure bred dogs. They should be given the same respect, affection, and love. This day also aims to remind us that there are millions of mixed breed dogs left in shelter all over the country and also in the world. They are just waiting for a loving family to bring them home.

History of the National Mutt Day
This holiday was created and pioneered by Colleen Paige. She is an animal welfare advocate and a family and pet lifestyle expert. The holiday was proclaimed by her in 2005. Her aim was to shed light on the problem of mixed breed dogs being abandoned and also euthanized because of over breeding. That is why she created this special day to be celebrated twice each year – on July 31 and December 2- so that people will understand that mixed breed dogs not only need to be saved but also celebrated and embraced just like other dogs.
According to statistics, 8 out of 10 dogs in animal shelters are mixed breeds. The reason for this is that people prefer to adopt pure breed dogs instead of mixed breeds. Hence, the latter are left out in animal shelters. In addition, the fees paid by people to adopt pure breed dogs are much lower than if these dogs were purchased from pet stores. Do you know? There’s another pet holiday that encourages people to adopt Bulldogs, called National Bull Dogs .
